March 22 event to spotlight Michiana Women Leaders

Michiana Women Leaders, Inc., a newly-formed nonprofit corporation, will host an informal gathering March 22 at 6:00 pm at the Near Northwest Neighborhood Association Community Center, 1007 Portage Avenue, South Bend.

Several women honored at previous annual Celebrating Michiana Women Leaders exhibits will be present for informal conversation with attendees, and the 2018 exhibit will be displayed. All are welcome at this community event.

The event will be the first hosted by Michiana Women Leaders, Inc., which was formed in February, building on the success of The Michiana Women Leaders Project launched in 2014 by Terri Russ, an author, community activist, and associate professor of communication at Saint Mary’s College.

Russ began work on the project after learning that very little documentation of Michiana women’s history exists. Through the project, Russ has recorded the oral histories of many Michiana women and has conducted research about women no longer living.

The community enthusiastically embraced the project from the beginning, and awareness of the initiative has grown through the annual Celebrating Michiana Women Leaders exhibit that works to build women’s history in the area by honoring women whose oral histories Russ has collected. Held on Women’s Equality Day (August 26), the event is well-attended and supported by the community.

Russ said, “We formed Michiana Women Leaders, Inc. to carry forward the work of collecting women’s history in Michiana. Women’s contributions are ignored across all fields, and by not being written into the historical record, women are written out of history. We’re changing that circumstance, one story at a time.”

The event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.
