CHRISTINE MURDOCK

“I think women can do whatever they want.”

When Christine Murdock describes herself she says, “I have a lot of energy” and “I have a lot of interests,” which seems like an understatement. Upon her arrival in South Bend in 1947, Christine taught riding and swimming to girls attending Saint Mary’s Academy. Over the years she has been involved in numerous facets of the community, including teaching classes at Saint Mary’s College, providing volunteer tax assistance for the elderly, holding numerous leadership positions in the Saint Joseph County Republicans, providing political consulting to the Michiana Tea Party, among many others. Following Hurricane Katrina, Christine opened her home to a displaced family and continued to help them for several years. About this experience Christine observed, “I have been privileged to learn how a large segment of the population deals with poverty.”

Christine observes that “everything I get into I end up being the president or something.” Perhaps her greatest gifts to the community have come through her hobbies of dancing, computers, and flying. She has taught dancing classes to youth through the Junior Assembly dancing classes she founded in conjunction with the Junior League and to seniors at the Forever Learning Institute. She has shared her love of computers by teaching various computer classes at the Forever Learning Institute and creating various PowerPoint presentations to celebrate monumental events and share exciting flying news.

Her love of flying began when her husband took flying lessons. One day while in the air together, she wondered what would happen to her if something happened to him while piloting and decided to take lessons to become a pilot in her own right. In addition to participating in the Transcontinental Air Race Classic, she has flown in numerous fundraising events and has won the Indiana Dunes Chapter Air Rally five times. Clearly, Christine’s life has been defined by doing whatever she wants.
